THE NORMAL ADVANCE213UtterarpALETHENAI NOTES.THE work of the Alethenai Literary So¬
ciety has afforded more than the usual
pleasure for the members during this term.
The opera and development of the drama have
been the chief subjects of attention. One of
the most interesting hours the society has
spent this year was given over to Wagner and
his works. Each girl responded to the roll
call with a title of a Wagnerian opera, then
the following program was given:Life and Works of Wagner—Miss Costelow.Parsival—Miss Golay.Tannhauser—Miss Ellison.Other meetings of the term have been spent
in the discussion of various musicians and
dramatists, and the work the remainder of
the term will be of a similar nature. At two of the meetings the society enjoyed
having as its guest Miss Zoe Bodenhafer, a
former Alethenai member.Advantage will be taken of the remaining
few weeks of this term to arouse new interest
to be carried over into the work of the com¬
ing year and to be taken away by those who
complete their work here. The graduating
members are the Misses Arbogast, Provines,
Rowe, Ellison, Harris, Burkett, Elston and
Sandford.CICERONIAN DEBATING SOCIETY.The Ciceronian Debating Society believes
with St. Augustine, There is nothing so la¬
borious as not to labor. Blessed is he who de¬
votes his life to great and noble ends, and who
forms his well-considered plans with deliber¬
ate wisdom.Acting on this precept, Ciceronians are put¬
ting their hearts into their work, and are striv¬ing to reach such a high standard of efficient
work that the name Ciceronian will be for all
posterity a token of unparalleled industry—a
stimulus and an example to him who devotes
his life to great and noble ends. The weekly meetings are enthusiastically at¬
tended every member bears in his heart the desire to be in the thickest of the battle every man is on his toes pushing the general level of the society to a higher plane and ever, as each individual grows upward toward his ideal, the standards of the whole society ap¬ proach the ideal St. Augustine holds beforeus.Truly work is a blessing.DAEDALIAN.The society is nearing the years end with a membership of fourteen. Of these, seven are graduating Seniors. It is likely that an or¬ ganization will be maintained throughout the summer term with regular meetings. Arrange¬ ments have been completed for the annual boat ride on Decoration Day. Invitations have been issued to all old members and a large number are expected to be present to help make it the biggest and best yet.In the literary programs of the month, the feminist movement and the regulation of for¬ eign immigration supplied subjects for de¬ bate. Current events and parliamentary law received special emphasis.ECLECTIC LITERARY SOCIETY.On the whole the months work has been highly gratifying and has added to the inter¬ est of all members. Two former members, Miss Cline and Miss |
