Description: |
This painting depicts a day of cutting hay in the summer or fall. A black tractor sits in front of a field with a belt attached to a conveyer belt that is moving the hay from the field to be made into neat piles on the wagons. Three men stand on top of the mounds of hay pushing it onto the conveyer belt. Each of the three men are wearing blue pants, a white shirt, black suspenders, and a straw hat. As the conveyer drops hay into another wagon as it is stacked on the belt. Another man in the same set of clothing stands in the black tractor making sure that it is running the belt correctly. The tractor is large, two-wheeled, and has a large amount of fumes coming out of the front of it. The controls are covered by an overhang to keep the sun off the person running the tractor. In the background, there is a field of more piles of hay and a tree line in the distance. Around the tractor, another man stands on the ground next to a pile of hay. There is a jug of water, a shovel, and a tool kit of some kind around the back end of the tractor. The title of the painting, Thrashing Day, is in the center of the bottom edge in black. The date and copyright are in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black. When I first saw this painting I said, Thats a fairly modern piece of equipment for your people She replied that it was okay to use because it had steel wheels instead of rubber tires. I asked why that made a difference? She patiently explained that you cant take the steel wheels out on a paved road, so the young men wont be taking the tractor to town to drive around on Saturday night. I laughed out loud at the image of young plain folks cruising Nappanee on Saturday night on a tractor.Purchased from the Steve & Sheri Scott-Welty Collection |
