Description: |
The painting depicts children playing in the snow on a cold winter day. The background of this painting is very simple, consisting of a hill with trees and a house along the ridgeline. The trees in the background are all green fir trees. In the right corner of the ridge line, there is the top of a yellow house with a brown roof. The chimney on the house has a stream of gray smoke suggesting that the day is cold and a decent fire is needed to warm the house. At the bottom of the hill, two trees covered in snow stand on the edges of the painting around the children. These trees are deciduous with no leaves and large brown trees and branches. The children are playing at the bottom of the hill. A boy in a red coat and blue pants kneels in the snow next to a fallen log feeding a red squirrel. The girl stands by a cut stump in a long green coat with yellow mittens and a yellow scarf. A yellow bowl or basket sits on the stump in front of her, holding the feed that she is throwing to the rabbit on the ground. The rabbit is all white and is eating the grain/crumbs on the ground around the stump. There another cut stump behind the rabbit. The title of the painting, Like a Long Time Ago, is in the center of the bottom edge in black. The possible age of Schrock is in black in the bottom left corner. Schrocks signature and the year are in the bottom right corner in brown and black. This is a sweet little painting. It must have been a fond memory from Emmas childhood by the tiny inscription in the lower left corner - 47 yrs ago? She is telling the viewer a tale that happened when she was a child approximately 12 years old. In the painting one child is enjoying feeding a squirrel while the other child is spreading breadcrumbs on the snow for a bird. I do not know if Emma was one of the children or if she was the child that observed through the window as the others played in the snow. Her physical challenges often prevented her from being an active participant. Emma observed life, and recorded a fond memory, timelessly expressed in this painting.Purchased from the collection of Steve & Sheri Scott-Welty |
