Recess Time

Description: This painting depicts children playing outside of a school during their recess on a winter day. The schoolhouse in the left upper half of the painting is bright red with a covered porch and a steeple. The side of the schoolhouse facing the yard of children has five large windows. There is also a circular, possibly stain glass window on the front of the school above the front porch. A white mailbox also stands in front of the school. There are many different activities happening between the 29 children in the school yard. On the left edge of the painting near a large tree covered in snow, three older children skate on the pond near the school. Four boys work on building a large snowman near the right of the same tree. By the other tree in the painting, a large snow-covered one on the right side, two girls stand talking while another group of two works on more snowmen. Fifteen of the children are riding on sleds down the hill near the school. One or two children sit on the sleds going down the hill while three kids pull their sleds back up the hill. Two kids drive their sleigh with a brown horse back up the hill towards the school. These two boys may be leaving for lunch or going home for the rest of the day. The ground and background are snow covered in a mixture of white and blues. The title of the painting, Recesstime, is in the middle of the bottom edge in black. The date is in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in a dark blue.
