Description: |
This painting depicts a family doing chores around the farm in the early evening. There are three buildings in the painting including the farmhouse, the shed, and a large barn. The farmhouse is seen along the left edge with white siding and a green roof. The house has a covered front porch and a pink vining plant climbing the visible side of the house. At the end of the lane, a small red shed for buggies stands waiting for the buggy coming down the lane. The large barn is bright red with brown roofing and accents in the doors. The bottom of the barn opens into a pasture for cows. This pasture has a large pile of golden hay sitting in it. In front of the fenced cow pasture, there are two more smaller fenced pastures. The left pasture has three horses and two foals in brown. The pasture on the right has a small shelter in red and is filled with six pink pigs laying around. All of these pasture are connected to a dirt lane in the center. Cows are being led into this fenced lane into the pasture for the night by two men in white shirts, blue pants, and straw hats. These two men are leading the black and white cows down the edge of the blue creek on the right side of the painting from the grazing fields. A small black and white dog stands by the farmers to help them herd the cows. There are at least 12 cows in the painting, but they become less distinguishable in the distance along the creek. Four children play in the yard in front of the pastures. One girl plays with a yellow tabby, a boy and a girl seem to be playing with the butterflies in the yard, and another girl runs after a butterfly by herself. The title of the painting, Chore Time is in the center of the bottom edge in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black.Miss Emma did several paintings on Reves and Arches paper. Her storyline in this painting is centered on a Saturday that the parents went visiting, leaving the oldest son in charge. Well its chore time, and the children are enjoying catching fireflies in the meadow instead of doing chores. The oldest boy is bringing the cows in from pasture for milking. Surprise! Mom and Dad return home early. This was the tale that Miss Emma shared with us.Purchased from the collection of Steve & Sheri Scott-Welty |
