Description: |
This painting depicts a familys cabin in the woods during the sugar season in winter. The majority of the painting has many large trees covered in snow on sides where the wind has blown it. The trees have large trunks in different shades of brown and gray with black accents. Most of the large trees around the cabin are tapped with covered buckets hanging from the trees, collecting the sap. The cabin is simple, made of wood, and does not have any visible windows. There is a chimney with smoke coming out of the cabin where they are making the syrup from the sap collected. In the doorway of the cabin, a couple stands watching their children. The man is dressed in all black while the woman is dressed in a blue coat and pink dress. She looks to be holding a wooden ladle which she may be using to make the syrup. In front of the cabin, there are barrels of syrup/sap, a pile of wood for the fire, and the kids playing in the clearing. A girl is playing with a brown and white dog. A boy sits on the pile of firewood reading a book. Another boy stands in the clearing with a stick, playing with the snow and the stick. A sleigh is driving up the lane to the cabin with a load of more barrels to be filled. The sleigh is beige and is drawn by two horses, one brown and one gray. A man in all black stands in front of the barrels driving the sleigh. The title of the painting, Yesteryears, is in the center of the bottom edge in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in dark blue. |
