The Family Dinner

Description: This painting depicts a large family eating together during the winter. The coloring of the room is very similar to ES.16. A large picture window on the back wall shows the snow and two barns outside of the house. Green sunshades line the top of the window. A vining plant can be seen across the edge of the ceiling above the windows. A calendar next to the window suggests that the month is January. The table sits in front of the window surrounded by people. As per the culture, men sit on one side of the table while women sit on the other. There are twelve men facing the women who have their backs turned to the outside of the painting. Each man has a different height, hair color, and clothing, but all have faces in this painting. There are eleven women in the painting, each having their own color dress, white bonnets or natural hair, and some have side views of their faces. Most of the women are seated on a long bench. The table has many different types of food on it. The table settings are simple, but the plates are blue and white china. The floor is covered in multiple small rugs and different toys the children have played with during the day. A bedroom is visible on the left side of the painting with what looks like coats on it. The right edge of the painting has a door leading outside. The title of the painting, The Family Dinner, is in black in the center of the bottom edge. The date and copyright are in the bottom left corner in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black.
