Description: |
The painting depicts a winter day in Lancaster County, PA with a two houses, a barn, and two families on the road. The landscape is mainly white as if covered in snow. There are at least six trees with light brown bark covered in snow. In the middle to upper left side, there is a red house with snow cover rood. The house has six visible paned-windows and a brown chimney on the side of the house closest to the white house seated next to it. The white house in much smaller than the red and has three sections. There are four visible paned-windows with a small red chimney top located on the largest middle section of the house. The middle of the three sections on the white house is two-storied while the other two sections on the left and right of the house are single-storied. There is a large gray wind-mill located behind the two houses, it is difficult to notice with the white tree in the background. A light brown fence separates the two houses yards from the road. There are two light brown barns in the middle to right edge of the painting. One barn is in the distance surrounded by trees while the other is closer to the road with two large trees blocking sections of it from view. The road has two families, one traveling on foot and another by horse-drawn sleigh. The family traveling by foot consists of a man in all black with a beard, a woman in a blue dress with a coat and gray scarf, a small boy dressed in all blue, and a small girl dressed in all pink. Each person has their hair covered by hat or scarf and all have black shoes. The second family is seated in two rows in a sleigh of various shades of brown with black runners. The family consists of five people: two men and three women. The older man is driving the sleigh from the first row of seats, dressed in all black with a hat. Two women sit with the man driving, one is older and dressed in all black with a blue/gray scarf. Unlike all other persons in this painting, the older woman in the sleigh has two dark dots for eyes. The second woman in the front seat is younger, sitting on the lap of the older woman. She is dressed in all pink with a blue scarf. In the second seat, a young boy and girl sit dressed in mostly black excluding the boys blue coat and the girls blue scarf. Each row has their own green/yellow blanket covering the familys laps. The horse pulling the sleigh is a light brown (caramel) mare with white on the head and feet. The horse is facing a direction that allows viewers to see the black blinders on its head. The horse is in a position suggesting a slower walk. The title of the painting, Lancaster County Pa. is located in the bottom, just to the right of the center underneath the road in black. The painting is dated in black in the bottom left corner. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right in a mixture of blue and black paint. The wooden frame is a rustic unfinished style in a faded light brown. It has some large chips in the outermost edges of the frame. |
