Description: Snapshot of a wreck during an early race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, circa 1910. The photo provides a good view of the interior of the car and two-man cockpit which allowed a mechanic to ride with the driver.While the first 500-mile race was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30, 1911, racing began when the track opened on August 19, 1909--including several races held in May, June and September of 1910.
