Description: Snapshot of Louis Cheverolet in his Marquette-Buick race car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway circa 1910. Chevrolet sits in the drivers seat while several men who appear to be his pit crew perform various tasks on and around the car.Chevrolet history specialists state that this was likely taken in May of 1910. On May 27 he drove the Model 10 Buick (#36) in a five-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On May 30 he competed in two different events with the car, winning a ten-mile event.Louis-Joseph Chevrolet (1878-1941), a native of Switzerland, was a race car driver and co-founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911. He is buried in the Holy Cross and Saint Joseph Cemetery in Indianapolis.Photo is part of the John Harlan collection of early racing photos.
