Exterior of Oehlers watch and jewelry shop, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1880

Description: Albumen cabinet card photograph by D. C. Redington of a brick Italianate commercial building. Men stand in front of the entrance doors with the address 183 on the transom window, while women and children pose on the 2nd-floor iron balcony. Seen in the display windows are many clocks and the reflection of a large street clock to the right. The lender stated that this was the downtown Indianapolis jewelry and clock store of Roman Oehler (1841-1920), listed under Watches, Clocks and Jewelry, at 183 W. Washington Street in Polks 1879 Indianapolis City Directory, p. 563. He lived at the same address, so the people on the balcony are likely his family. His business was also listed at that address in at least the 1876 through 1891 directories. Oehlers obituary states that he remained on Washington Street until retiring in 1893. The family later owned the Hannah-Oehler-Elder House.A poster to the right reads, in part, Park Opera House, One Week _____, Monday O[cut off], Coll___ Bankers Daughter. Ad advertisement for Colliers Combination Bankers Daughter, a play to be performed for six nights commencing Monday, October 4, 1880, appears in the Indianapolis News, October 6, 1880, p. 4.The building is not extant. It was located on the south side of West Washington Street between South Mississippi (now Senate Avenue) and South Missouri Streets. After the 1898 address change, the new address was 347 West Washington Street.
