Description: |
Portrait of Bertha (Stumpf) Martens (1865-1930) probably taken around the time of her marriage to Herman Martens in 1886.Born in a log cabin along South Meridian Street in Indianapolis in 1865, Bertha Stumpf was the daughter of George Stumpf, a German-American immigrant who came to Indainapolis in the 1830s. The photo comes from a 73-page family histry written by Bertha in 1940s that documents multiple generations of several prominent German-American families who formed a community on the south side of Indianapolis in the second half the nineteenth century.Of special interest is the history of Three Notch Farm purchased by George Stumpf in 1853. Located on South Meridian Street [between Troy and Sumner Avenues], the property came with a large two-story, four-room cabin where Bertha was born in the cabin in 1865 and includes her detailed drawings of both the interior and exterior. In 1870 the foundation was laid for a two-story brick house at 3225 South Meridian which remained in the family until 2015.See object id#ia-0307-c001-0001 to view the entire family history collection. |
