History of the Stumpf Family, Indianapolis, Indiana

Description: A written and pictorial history of an early Indianapolis pioneer family, George and Elizabeth Stumpf and their descendants (73 scanned pages).Stumpf immigrated to Indianapolis from Germany in the late 1830s, as did several of his brothers and sisters. His children married into other German-American families in Indianapolis, and some of their histories are also covered including members of the Marten, Iske and Strobel families. Most of the Indianapolis families covered worked in the furniture and decorating trades in the period covered in family history--primarily 1850 through 1900.The history was written by George Stumpfs youngest daughter, Bertha [Stumpf] Martens (1865-1930), in 1943 and 1944; her daughter Ruth [Martens] Iske (1890-1930) added several pages of text and many of the photographs at the end of the collection; Ruths daughter Madeline [Iske] Strobel c91919-2006) also contributed.Of special interest is the history of Three Notch Farm purchased by George Stumpf in 1853. Located on South Meridian Street [between Troy and Sumner Avenues], the property came with a large two-story, four-room cabin. Bertha was born in the cabin in 1865 and includes detailed drawings of both the interior and exterior. In 1870 the foundation was laid for a two-story brick house at 3225 South Meridian which remained in the family until 2015.
