Washington Street facade of the Claypool Hotel on the corner of Washington and Illinois Street. The eight-story, 495-room hotel boasted more bathtubs than any other hotel in the country, as well as the largest lobby. Telephones in every guest room were also a much touted luxury. It also housed a theature, assembly hall, roof garden, atrium cafe, and several restaurants.The building was razed in 1969, after a devastating fire in 1967. |
