Handwritten on the back is Jap Willis taken out at a Rode House [sic roadhouse] where St. Vincent now stands. Written later on a Post-It note: 1890 Indiana Business Gazetteer / Fred C. Kissel Saloon SE cor. 19th & Tennessee.Jap Willis (ca. 1859-1944) was described in his obituary as the last of the old-time drivers of multiple horse teams in Indianapolis. He drove for the Indianapolis Brewing Company for more than 30 years. [Indianapolis News, September 8, 1944, p. 16]. Charles Frederick Kissel, Jr. (1856-1933) operated Kissels Garden from 1886 and until it closed in 1902. The bar and beer garden was located on the southeast corner of North Capitol and West 26th Street. St. Vincents Hospital was later constructed on the site. |
