Description: |
Front of image shows a carved stone head atop a stone block that is fixed to a wooden platform. The back caption says Brown County, Indiana. / The Stone Head, known as the Indiana Sphinx is the only road guide of its kind in the state and perhaps in the United States. It was one of three carved by Henry Cross seventy-four years ago. The other two have become lost or destroyed. The sphinx-like face was formerly kept painted white and the hair black that the night traveler might see it easily in the dark. The marker, carved around 1851, stood at the corner of State Road 135 South and Bellsville Pike. The head of the carving was destroyed in 2016. |
