Description: |
Designed by architect Fermor Spencer Cannon, the Butler Fieldhouse (later renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse) has a self-supporting roof, meaning that it requires no supporting pillars or beams that would impede the view of some spectators. Originally, the building was approximately 94,900 square feet and contained 820,000 bricks. Several sources state the Fieldhouse was constructed in four and a half months, allowing the first Butler basketball game to take place in the structure on March 7, 1928, when the Bulldogs defeated Notre Dame 21-13, in overtime. However, work continued on the interior of the structure for several months after the game. Before the Butler versus Notre Dame game, the first-year basketball team played a team made up of Butler alumni, which included Hal Griggs, Robert Wakeman, Robert Nipper, Jim Keach, Al Harker, Dave Konold, Jerry Strole, Gene Colway, John Leslie, and Orville Hooker. |
