Irwin Library

Description: Located in the South Mall, Irwin Library was designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki. The library opened to the public on September 9, 1963, and was dedicated on May 1, 1965. 228 prestressed concrete vaults were constructed for the building by Shute Concrete Products of Richmond, Indiana. Each vault weighs seven to eight tons and is forty-feet long. Specially designed trucks were needed to deliver the vaults to Butler University. The columns on the building are made of quartz aggregate. This photograph, likely taken from the roof of Jordan Hall, showcases Irwin Librarys skylight in the center of the roof. To the right of the library is the dorm Residential College.
