Irwin Library and the South Mall

Description: People walk along the sidewalks in the South Mall as viewed from the roof of Jordan Hall. The buildings in the background of the photograph are Irwin Library (left) and Residential College (right). When Irwin Library opened in 1963, 165,000 books and periodicals needed to be moved from Jordan Hall to the new library. The head librarian at the time, H. L. Boisen, enlisted the help of Butler University football players. After maintenance workers moved the boxes of materials to Irwin Librarys ground-floor or loading docks, football players carried the boxes to their assigned shelving areas. This work was completed without the use of the buildings elevators or automatic book lifts, which were not yet operational.
