Scene in Fairview Park

Description: Postcard of the boathouse, boats, and Indiana Central Canal Towpath in Indianapolis, Indiana. These attractions were part of Fairview Park, which opened on June 18, 1890. The land, formerly the 264 acre Adam Scott farm, was purchased by the Citizens Street Railway Company for the creation of an amusement park. The park allowed Indianapolis residents to enjoy outdoor activities, but it also encouraged them to take the streetcar that stopped at the park. A February 14, 1890, article in the Indianapolis Journal states that the Citizens Street Railway Company was developing an electric trolley system, which would run from Union Station to Crown Hill Cemetery and Fairview Park. The six and half mile trip would take twenty minutes and each train could hold 150 to 175 people. The line was set to open in May of that year and the planned fare was five cents.
