Description: |
On this postcard, people are playing tennis on one of the tennis courts at Fairview Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. The land, formerly the 264 acre Adam Scott farm, was purchased by the Citizens Street Railway Company for the creation of an amusement park. The park opened on June 18, 1890. Besides the tennis courts, park amenities included a bandshell, electric fountains, moving pictures, a miniature railway, boat rides on the canal, a bowling alley, and a skating rink. At the time of the Indiana State Fair in 1891, the Indianapolis News ran articles encouraging fair visitors to stop at Fairway Park as well. During this time, the park added additional attractions including parachute jumps and hot air balloon shows. |
