Description: |
This Irvington home was built in 1908 for Carlos Recker and his wife Anne (Butler) Recker. The two story home was designed in the Arts and Crafts architectural style. The design of the home has been attributed to a floor plan that appeared in Gustav Stickleys magazine The Craftsman, and is the only known Stickley designed house in Indiana. Both of the Reckers were graduates of Butler University and Anne was one of the granddaughters of the Universitys founder, Ovid Butler. Carlos was an interior designer who designed the interiors for many public buildings in Indianapolis including the Columbia Club and the Indiana and Circle Theatres. He also ran the Sander and Recker Furniture Company with his brother Gustav. Anne was active in many philanthropic organizations in Indianapolis. The home was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Aley in 1922. Indiana native Robert J. Aley was a mathematics professor and served as Indianas State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1909 until 1910. He served as the president of Butler University from 1921 until July 1, 1931, during which time he helped to oversee the Universitys move from Irvington to the current Fairview campus. Aley and his wife Nellie (Archer) lived in the home until 1929, when they moved so they could be closer to Butler Universitys new location. This house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. |
