Rowena Farber, Milton L. Farber Jr., PhD, Michael Shasberger, and others sit at a table during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner

Description: Milton L. Farber Jr., PhD, Professor of History at Butler University, passes a plate to another diner at the table during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner. Seated on his right is Rowena Farber, formerly a Reference Librarian at Butler University, and Michael Shasberger, wearing a tuxedo, sits on the opposite side of the table. Shasberger, a baritone, was one of the performers at the concert that preceded the dinner along with Rudolf Nureyev, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and others. A server stands near the table holding a wine or champagne bottle. Held in the Krannert Room in Clowes Memorial Hall, the formal dinner followed the performance, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the building. A rose filled centerpiece adorns the table, since the rose is the official emblem of Clowes Memorial Hall. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot structure began on August 15, 1960, and the building officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources.
