Description: |
Rudolf Nureyev (back to camera) stands to greet two unknown people while standing next to a table during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner. A server stands nearby ready to refill drinks and Margaret (Peggy) Gracie Jackson Clowes sits at the table at the far right. Clowes husband, Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes Jr. (white mustache) sits at the next table, as does their son, Dr. Alexander (Alec) Whitehill Clowes (glasses and dark mustache). Held in the Krannert Room in Clowes Memorial Hall, the formal dinner followed a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the building. During the evenings festivities, Nureyev received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Butler University. A rose filled centerpiece adorns the table, since the rose is the official emblem of Clowes Memorial Hall. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes (the father of Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes Jr. and the grandfather of Dr. Alec Clowes). The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
