Held in the Krannert Room in Clowes Memorial Hall, the formal dinner followed a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the building. During the evenings festivities, Nureyev received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Butler University. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the father of Dr. George H. A. Clowes Jr. and Allen Clowes, Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, and the majority of the financing was made possible by their mother, Edith Clowes, through the Clowes Foundation. Other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
