Plaque at the intersection of Butler Avenue and University Avenue, marking the location of Butler Universitys Irvington campus

Description: Located near the intersection of Butler and University Avenues in Irvington, this marker was erected by Butler University in 1967. This was the location of the Universitys second campus from 1875 until 1928. During this time the University went through several name changes. At the time of the Universitys arrival in Irvington, it was known as North Western Christian University, but only until 1877, when the name was changed to Butler University, over the protests of the Universitys founder Ovid Butler. The name changed again in 1896 to Butler College, but it was changed back to Butler University in 1923.
