The Residence at Butler Universitys Irvington campus

Description:	Constructed in 1882, this three-story brick building, called the Residence, served as the first dormitory on Butler Universitys Irvington campus. At the time of its opening, the building was coeducational, but parental protests led to the dormitory being open to women students only by 1893. The building became a dorm for men only during the 1898-1899 school year, but it reverted to an all-female dormitory in 1901. During that year, renovations to the building included wiring for electricity and public areas were increased. By 1919, the Residence was at full capacity with forty women and continued to be popular with female students until the University moved to its current Fairview campus in 1928.
