Description: |
Both Lilly Hall (left) and Clowes Memorial Hall (right) are under construction. The construction of Clowes Hall began on August 15, 1960, and the general contractor was the George Bahre Company, while the construction of Lilly Hall began in April 1961, with the J.L. Simmons Company, Inc. as the general contractor. As both buildings were under construction at the same time, some issues occurred between the contractors, who competed for open space around the two projects. Lilly Hall opened in September 1962, while Clowes Hall opened in October 1963. To the right of the construction, the 408-foot radio antenna for WAJC (W Arthur Jordan Conservatory) is visible. The radio station first broadcast on September 24, 1950, but in 1951, the Jordan College of Music (formerly called the Arthur Jordan Conservatory) merged with Butler University, creating the Jordan College of Music of Butler University (JCM; renamed Jordan College of the Arts (JCA) in 2012). The antenna for the student run radio station was relocated to the west side of Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1961. At the time, JCM offered programs in dance, music, drama, television, and radio. In 1982, the radio station became an affiliate of National Public Radio (NPR), but in 1993, the station was sold to raise money for other University projects. |
