Lake in Holcomb Gardens

Snow lightly dusts the ground around the edges of the lake in Holcomb Gardens. Although Holcomb Gardens opened in 1950, the lake was not completed until 1952. Sometimes referred to as a reflection pond, the body of water was a gift from J. I. Holcomb and was built in a natural ravine. According to the article Lake Grows on Campus in the September 18, 1952, issue of The Butler Collegian, Over 2 million gallons of well water will flow hourly over a nine feet high water fall in the center of the lake. A dam separates the tow [two] sections of the lake, which will reach a depth of 7 feet in some places (p. 1). |
