Butler University President Geoffrey Bannister speaks at the unveiling of the bulldog statue outside Atherton Union

Description: Butler University President Geoffrey Bannister speaks at a lectern decorated with the Butler University seal, during the unveiling of the bulldog statue on the south side of Atherton Union, while a person films the event. To the right of Bannister is the covered bulldog statue that was carved from Indiana limestone by Matthew Gray Palmer, in association with Old World Stone Carving. The statue was the senior class gift from the Class of 1996, which raised almost $4,000 to pay for the statue and the senior class officers participated in the unveiling. From left to right, standing behind the camera and to the left of Bannister, the officers are believed to be Pam Moise (Class of 1996), president; Heidi Browne (Class of 1996), secretary; and John Stewart (Class of 1996), vice president. In the background, a police officer and another person watch the event from the doorway. According to the summer 1996 issue of the Butler Quarterly, Bannister remarked at the statues dedication on May 7, 1996, that a new Butler tradition would start-rubbing the bulldogs backside before an exam would earn the student a higher grade (p. 5).
