Description: |
Butler University President Geoffrey Bannister stands at a lectern during the groundbreaking ceremony for an Atherton Union addition. He is wearing a hard hat, has a shovel over his right shoulder, and a pile of dirt is nearby. Other people are seated or standing while watching the proceedings and some have shovels and hard hats. The seated person in the photograph is Faculty Assembly Chair Dr. W. Kent Van Tyle (Class of 1967). Originally named the John Whistler Atherton Center, in honor of John W. Atherton (Class of 1900), who served for 26 years as the secretary-treasurer for the University, the building opened on January 3, 1950. However, four decades later, the administration of Butler University felt the building was not being used to its true potential. The building was updated and a 24,000 square-foot addition was constructed at the southern end of the building, which was renamed Atherton Union. Beyond the construction fence, cars are parked along Hampton Drive and the Alpha Chi Omega House is visible. |
