Description: |
The President of the Butler University Board of Directors, Hilton U. Brown (Class of 1880, M.A. 1882) shovels dirt at the groundbreaking ceremony for Atherton Union. According to the description of the event in the July 1948 issue of the Butler Alumnus, In every respect it was what Hilton U. Brown, 80, jocularly sang over the public address system, Oh, What a Beautiful Morning, as he made a few brief but appropriate remarks before turning the first spade of soil (p. 5). Seated behind Brown is John F. Mitchell Jr. (Class of 1906), a board member. Brown was the first person to break ground at the ceremony, using a shovel that was decorated with blue and white ribbons. Approximately 1,500 people gathered to watch the proceedings. The markings on the photograph appear to be cropping marks. |
