Italianate home near the original campus location of Butler University

Description: A color photograph of an Italianate style home across the street from Butler Universitys original campus location, near the intersection of 13th Street and College Avenue in Indianapolis. The University opened at this location on November 1, 1855, as North Western Christian University (name changed to Butler University in 1877). This house, located on the west side of College Avenue, is contemporary to the University. Ovid Butler, the founder of the University, lived nearby at what is now 13th Street and Park Avenue and he gave 20 acres of his own land to form the campus. The University did not segregate based on race, religion or gender. In fact, North Western Christian University was among the first universities in the United States to admit women on an equal basis with men. The University was located in this area until 1875 when it moved to Irvington.
