Students and supporters alike can be justly proud of the winning hardwood fives thatPop” Schooler gave University High this 1945-46 season. With real fire in their eyes andsmoke coming out of their ears” the Guinea Pigs made a name for themselves all over ourfair state. To start off U. H. S.’s seventh basketball season, Pop” had six returning letter-men andfour numeral winners. The appearance of Columbus, Martinsville, Burris of Muncie andMitchell on the Univee’s schedule this year provided the stiffest competition. All ten members of the varsity squad saw plenty of action as they took measure of Greencastle and Bloomfield. The flu” bug and Ellettsville handed U. H. S. its first setback, 32-28.During December the Guinea Pigs gained an even break with the other two laboratory schools:Burris of Muncie and State of Terre Haute. Mitchell’s last second field goal upset our boys’first appearance at the Second Street gym, where all home games, except Bloomfield, wereplayed this season. Next, Stinesville was trounced 42-32 in the final contest of the month.Sullivan squeezed out a 35-34 victory, but on January 18 the Guinea Pigs inaugurated afive game winning streak by edging out the B. H. S. Panthers 37-34. By beating our crosstown rivals we retain possession of the B. H. S.—U. H. S. trophy. A 1944 Sectional defeat wasavenged as the Schoolermen, now traveling to away” games via school bus, trimmed theMooresville Pioneers 39-31. Victories continued over the Martinsville, Spencer, and Ellettsville quintets by 4, 11, and 1 2 point margins respectively. The Columbus and Seymour eagerseach decisioned U. H. S. on successive Fridays despite miraculous second-half rallies. Thesegames, however, conditioned the team for its February 22 entry into the sectional. In the short space of thirty hours the Schoolermen tucked away our schools first sectionalcrown. Sounds easy yet it was the third straight year our team had reached the final game. This year we cashed in. The following Saturday, as one of 64 first-round champs, the teamfaced Linton in regional pairings. The Miners were hot, and only by brilliant team fight didour boys rally to knot the count at 34 all as regulation play ended. The zone defenders forgedahead again, and that was the ball game. Linton, 38; University, 36.Tough breaks like this were over-shadowed by the great honor of winning our first sectionalwhich came to our school a week previously.First Row: Jack Hoadley, Bud Bryan, Ralph Smallwood, Jack Beatty, David Rogers, George Gavit.Second Row: Mr. Schooler, coach; Bob Good, Dick.
