Description: Saturday, May 17, 1954.I found myself wandering in the halls of U. H. S. with wonderful memories ringing through my mind. I walked to the office, just like old times, and pinched myself to realize that Dick Buskirk wasn’t still sitting there andthat Jewell Fagan wasn’t still waiting for a readmittance slip. As thoughclasses were in session, I tugged up the stairs to governnyent class, amazinglymeeting Katie on the way with that unforgettable smile. Gathered aroundthe radiator was the usual crowd: Bill Gilmore warming his pants, BulldogMullan wilted on the floor for a last minute cramming, Pat Willard, AnnWoodward, and Patty Tomlinson jumping the rope with the Venetian cordwhile Betsy Gaugh sings “Snow White.’’ Chris Hepner zoomed by with acheer for the Navy but was drowned out by Johnny Humphrey’s cheer for theRed Socks. The bell rings—there’s a wave to Prexy Leible at her patrol postand Jean Haywood dodges the mad rush for the room. Three minutes laterPaula Bollenbacher and Mac Culleton, still bundled in coats and scarfs, skidneatly into their seats. The class relaxes as the debaters begin: Bill Cleveland, Dave Haring, and Ralph Kerr. Rob Love receives fifty cent passes nowand then for class dues. The buzzer again—all tramp to the Senior Classmeeting. Ox Gavit pounds the desk for order and smiles his wilting smile whileJo Hanson struggles through the minutes in her quiet manner. Eyes thenturn to Peg Woodward for a committee report. The meeting ends and attention turns to screams and hand shakings with Fred Gregory of the Sea Bees.It is also Navy Day for Joan Carter as Ivan Headley is home. Marian Gregoryrushes by the excitement while Eliz Hines hangs on. Upon passing MaryBradley and Marjorie Hooten, they shove a stack of material to be typed intotheir arms. Gay Jellema, just back from Michigan, tries to grab the girls, asthey go by, for bowling money. Stella Grabe looks fagged with a hand fullof money and defense stamps. On to chemistry—Bill Fielder creates amazingcolors and odors while Loren Stevens and Jim Stone break their equipment.Accidents come fast, and Margaret Easton rushes to the rescue with her first-aid kit. Walt Goodman hangs from the ceiling trying to get an action picturewhile Georgianna French shudders quietly by the blower. Above in the musicroom I can hear Carl Stapleton and Jack Cook crooning, and I think it’s MarcWilliams blasting out his trumpet while Phil Warrick jives out with thedrums. . Remember when Barbara Swartz used to play the piccolo and whenCharlie Winters played a horn? Our class was really hep! But on to gymfor more action. Chuck Murray and Paul Tompson hang from the balconywith cameras to snap the gym sharks: Vivian Gilmore, Dorothie Levaggi,Betty and Wanda Weimer. There is a roar overhead; and the plane experts,Patsy Hanson, Joy Hockgeiger and Betty Roberts, interrupt the picture. Classends and thoughts turn to food. At 12:30 Tom Black and Jeep Zeller hopit to “Take It And Get.’’ Max Porter and Pammy Cagle get hep too. BobPennington in zoot suit and “Joe College’’ Tom Duane dropped in to watch.Marcelle Pfaff and Glodine Welch join the jitter bugs. Loud laughs bellowout, and who would be telling the latest but Joe Hensley and Dave Church.1:55—on to class. Betty Scully looks dizzy with Quad problems. DottyTaylor kicks her stubborn locker in the last two minutes before the bell. Theafternoon lags on, and finally the four o’clock bell rings. Tommy Walkersmiles in relief and dashes out colliding with Harold Aynes on the way. Downto the gym now to watch Charlie Claude and Cider practicing basketballwith expectations of winning the sectional.Yes, those are certainly wonderful memories—wonderful memories Ishall never forget. It was a grand ole’ time I had in my years at U. H. S.The 1944 Jordannus19
