Standing: Albert Gaston, BuddyBruce, John Clayton, Coach FrankSmith, Bill Marshall, and DickHudelson.Started in the SpringThe golf team this year had a successful seasonunder the able guidance of Coach Frank Smith.Although a minor sport, golf offers an opportunityfor many boys to enter the field of athletics andenjoy a lifetime sport. Golf meets are arranged sothat five men compete in the away meets, andevery man on the squad takes part in the homemeets.The squad this year was bolstered by the returnof John Clayton and Bill Marshall, who werevarsity golfers last year, and Dick Hudelson returning letterman.David Bucher, senior, was chosen as the 1955Al Herman Award Winner. The award is voted eachyear to the athlete who has high grades, emotionalstability, and outstanding ability in sports.Al Herman was an outstanding athlete at University School in 1946 who died in 1947. The awardwas started in 1948 by Walter Gray to pay tributeto this outstanding athlete.This award is voted on by the U-men’s Club eachyear, and David is certainly a deserving recipient.He has participated in sports at U-School for fouryears and has lettered in football, basketball, andtennis. David was chosen as co-captain of the football team and also most outstanding backfield manthis year.Page seventy-one |
