The unfortunate couple named this happy child MaryMartha Bell.I cannot remember much of my life until I was three. Then Iwent to live with my aunt and uncle. After living with them for sometime, I became very ill. I was rushed to a hospital and promptlyplaced in the hands of a Nerve Surgeon. After several X-rays he putme in a ward with colored children. He thought that this would cureme of my nervous spell, but it didn’t. After considering variousmethods of cure, he settled upon buttermilk. So my diet became oneof drinking buttermilk three times a day and glaring at colored babiesthe rest of the time. I was soon well, but who wouldn’t get well? Thesurgeon’s cure didn’t make me well, but I never told him that. After returning home from this great adventure, we moved to thecountry. I ran and played in hills and valleys all day long and becamevery strong. One fine rainy day after my sixth birthday, this happyfreedom ended. I must begin to toil over my A, B, C s. The first fiveyears of school weren’t so bad, for my lessons were easy.In my sixth year I started in at Unionville High School. Gettingacquainted with new pupils wasn t such an easy task. I asked themtheir names so many times that they finally gave up trying to get meto remember. I was classed as a very low type moron but even theylearn something. My classes were easy enough, but I’d falter once in |
