COMMERCE DEPARTMENT—In thelast few years the Commerce Department hasincreased greatly. Instead of just typing I-IIand general business, shorthand and bookkeeping have been added to the curriculum.The department now accommodates one hundred and fifteen students.This year the department has moved toa new and larger room and has increased to atotal of twenty typewriters. Besides the regular class work, the commerce departmentdoes mimeographing for the Eagle, theschool and the community.SUPERVISED STUDY IN A CLASSROOM—Much of the work in the teachingand learning process can not be expressedwith pictures or with words. We do not knowjust how much credit should be given to anycourse or teacher in developing the physical,mental, and moral character of an individual;but we know that academic subjects such asEnglish, mathematics, history and Latin holdimportant positions in our present day curriculum. These boys and girls spend thirtyminutes in recitation and thirty minutes instudy, under the direct supervision of theirteacher.SHOP—Our shop contains a completeset of hand tools which show the effects ofwear. Our most useful tools are the powersaw, jointer, jig-saw, and grinder. We havein addition a small sander which has provedto be very useful.The first semester the boys make smallprojects such as: tie racks, bookshelves, andwhat-nots. The second semester each boy isrequired to make a major project, that is, aproject which will consume about threemonths time and cost more than $2.50. Somenever make for themselves but for others,such as refinishing antique furniture.HOME EC. DEPARTMENT — In thehome economics department of our school wehave 102 girls taking, not just cooking andsewing, but a well rounded vocational program of foods and nutrition, clothing and related art, child care and home nursing, housing, housekeeping and family budgeting, andpersonal and familv life.The picture of the foods laboratory thatyou see is planned so that the girls work inseparate kitchens; they nlan, prepare andserve meals for families of four.The school lunch project has increased byleaps and bounds this year. The meals areserved on trays and the children find a placein the dining room and eat there; then returntheir trays to the table to be stacked.Our main goal has been to have everyoneenjoy his lunch and to give each child a wellbalanced, attractive and nutritious meal.This year we have fed between 150 and 192all year and we are glad to say that many children have learned to like more fruits, vegetables, whole wheat breads, and more milk—the foods for health, strength, and growth.VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE — Interest in the vocational agriculture department has been growing rapidly.
