Description: 36 FALLSTANG TOUGH THROUGH ADVEFOOTBALLThe Edgewood Mustangs had three players, Christian Fleener, CodyCowden, and Gabe Koontz, named to the Western Indiana All-Conferenceteam this season. On August 18th, the varsity football team played their firstnon-conference game against North Putnam at Lucas Oil Stadium and lost21-0. During this game, senior Cody Cowden received a plaque for earning theteams highest GPA.I felt honored to get this award because it showed me that all of my hard: work finally paid off, Cowden said.The Edgewood Mustangs first conference game was on August 24th againstNorthview and they lost 20-13. Although their first game wasnt until August,the Mustangs started preseason workouts over the summer. The early morningworkouts consisted of lifting weights, running stairs, and numerous activities tostrengthen their bodies.Even though the team lost their biggest game of the year on September 7thagainst Owen Valley, it was definitely marked as the most interesting game ofthe season. During the second quarter of the game, a bad storm causedofficials to postpone the game 30 minutes each time lightning struck. Durino .the storm, both schools were forced into the gym until the storm passed athe game resumed. This was very interesting because of the rivalry betweerthe schools. While in the gym, both schools cheered back and forth, playedolleyball with beach balls, and tried to out tumble each other. After 45 minutesof waiting for the storm to pass, they finally pushed the game back a day. Thenext day both teams fought their hardest, but Owen Valley beat Edgewood25-14. / ■ ^1- l^ AiSThe varsity football team consisted of eight seniors, nine juniors and sevensophomores, a young team that finished the season with a 2-8 record. Theirtwo wins of the season were against South Vermillion (40-14) and BrownCounty (7-0). The Edgewood Mustangs played Batesville for their first round ofsectionals and lost 7-31, thus ending their season. Although they didnt get theseasonthey had all hoped for, they never gave up. They stuck together as ateam through every obstacle thrown at them, whether it be injuries, pain, or thelong hard practices.SophomoreAustin Smith
