When he goes, he visits thecountryside. France is very different fromthe U.S. because there are a lot of smallvillages and farms, said Crowley. In France,Bastille Day is a very big celebration. We doa huge Bastille Day celebration when weare in France, it is like the Fourth of July here,an independence day, said Crowley.Souths French class also celebrates holidaysthroughout the year.Molly WagschalM&k56Lane BordersjuniorAidan Crowleyphoto courtesy of Creative CommonsSenior Molly Wagschal has visited Spain twice, once by going toschool there, and another time during the summer with the IU Honorsprogram, which allows high school students to travel to differentcountries in order to be immersed in the language and culture.Wagschal takes Spanish at IU, so she takes content classes taught inSpanish since she has already learned all of the tenses. She hadtaken classes at South before she started the IU classes though. Theclasses here at South focus more on the cultures as a whole, but thelinguistics class I take at IU focuses on one syllabus that you have toget through, she said. There is just emphasis on developing secondlanguage skills, and it is taught in Spanish. Some of the holidays andfood traditions are celebrated in class at South for the culture, including Dia de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo. Food days happenfrequently, so Spanish classes can explore the tastes of manydifferent food items, some of them even homemade by students. |
