A Reason For RunningCougar Harriers run-up a 6-3 season and place second in the HHC.The Cross Country team again finishedwith a winning season, 6-3, under thedirection of Coach Jim Wright. Openingthe season with a loss to cross-town rivalBloomington South, 18-42, the CougarHarriers went on to beat West Vigo, Bedford, and Columbus East before falling toTerre Haute South, 27-28. Senior DanThompson and freshman Chris Crewellfinished 1-2 for North, running against avery tough Terre Haute South team.The Harriers then ran against Martinsville where Thompson spoiled CoachWrights plan of attack. Coach Wrightsstrategy was to have the Cougars runtightly grouped, but Thompson pulledaway from his teammates to claim firstplace as North won 15-45. Thompsonfinished in 12:56, 14 seconds ahead ofSeniors Dan Thompson and Tim Shelly pace eachother during a meet with Vincennes. Thompson finished first in 13:00 and Shelly fifth in 13:38.In the remaining 200 yards, senior Dave Calkinsreally turns on the steam. Calkins finished the 2V2mile race against Vincennes in 14:01.Watching his team warm up, Coach Wright hopesfor a victory over a very tough T. H. South team.Wright wasnt too disappointed as the Cougars lostin a very close race 27-28.the rest of the North pack. North runnersfinished 2-3-4-5, only six seconds separating the runners. Crewell was secondand seniors Tim Shelly, Ken Larimer, andLino Lebano followed him in.Thompson remained a fixture at thefront of the pack and Norths runners followed close behind as the harriers beatVincennes 17-44. Thompson won therace and his teammates bunched upbehind him quickly. Norths top five runners — Thompson, Crewell, Lebano,Shelly, and Larimer — finished within a29-second span. Coach Wright was especially pleased with Lebanos third placefinish in 13:13. Lebano really workshard, Wright said. Hes the kid wevebeen working with to push up in therewith the leaders. It looks like hes madeit.The Cougars placed second in theHHC Championship, losing to Floyd Centrals 47 points to Norths 55. I thoughtwe ran very well, Coach Wright said.Thompson did a great job, finishingstrong, and so did Chris. Lino was hurtearly in the week and if he could have runand finished in the vicinity of Shelly,which wouldnt be unusual, wed havewon the thing.Dan Thompson received the GoldAward, Most Valuable Runner, and LinoLebano received the Maroon Award,Exemplar Toughness, at the end of theseason. The Cougars ran the seasonwithout senior Eric Weaver who had acast on his wrist during the season andwas only able to compete in four meets.56 cross country |
