Description: MORE THAN JUST A RACESouth students Rilee Jolivette and Baileigh Goodlett attended the WomensLittle 500 Race; a bike racing tradition held in Bloomington each April. This year, the Womens Little 500 was not atypical bike race. Each year, the defendingchampions wear a yellow jersey. However, sincelast years winning team, Phoenix, hasdissolved, the championship was left up forgrabs. On pole day, Delta Gamma took the poleposition with the fastest qualifying time for awomens team in history, and the absence of ZetaTau Alpha caused the normal number of 33teams to reduce to 32 teams for this years race. The race was attended by the thousands of fanswho come to Bloomington each year to enjoy thefestivities, making it the largest collegiate bikerace in the United States. While most peoplecame about 30 minutes before the race started, the sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta packed thebleachers well beforehand in order to showsupport and boost morale for their team.Among these fans was junior BaileighGoodlett, who attended the race to cheer onKappa Alpha Theta. Another event that made thisyears race unique was the exchange of riders onKappa Alpha Thetas team during the final lapsof the race. Theta was pulling ahead the entirerace, but then at the very end, Theta switchedtheir rider to get their sprinter in on the 98thlap, which Goodlett said is super risky.Although this nail-biting exchange was a riskymove, Goodlett explained that the sprinteractually caught up to the person who was infirst, which made for a close finish.Senior Rilee Jolivette also attended the racethis year. Despite Kappa Alpha Thetasdisappointing loss last year, Jolivette and otherTheta fans were optimistic about this years race. Before Kappa Alpha Thetas loss in 2016, theyhad won the previous two years in a row, and the2016 race would have been a 3-peat. SinceKappa Alpha Theta had been so successful in thepast, Jolivette had anticipated Theta winningand was happy for them. The Womens and the Mens Little 500brings excitement and enthusiasm like no otherevent. From the waving of the green flag at thebeginning to the victory laps at the end, thetraditions of the Little 500 are highly valuedamong the people of Bloomington, along withthe fans from afar. This great IU tradition is notonly enjoyed by the general public, but the racealso helps fund scholarships for deserving IUstudents.
