Description: The Girls hurdling group is one part of the track and field team thattakes nothing for granted in everything from practice drills to meets.Hurdles are not easy. They combinestrength, agility, fast reflexes andoverall determination and passion forthe sport. It takes a unique type ofathlete to choose to focus on and trainfor the hurdles.Freshman Sejal Rajamani isone of those athletes. For a hurdler, there are so many aspects to focuson, Rajamani said. You have to bereally dedicated if you want to masterall of it. Rajamani joined the ranks ofthe elite hurdling group along withsophomore MarynancyMwakalindile. It requires courage,Mwakalindile said. She was right -courage was a necessary componentof the girls team this season. The girls hurdlers trained hard fortheir meets. In addition to the regularruns and sprints that was standard forall runners, freshman Jordan Monsondetailed the extra workout. We dohurdle walk overs, and we practice [theway we] jump over them, Monsonsaid. The rehearsal of this techniquemade the difference between a decentperformance and a great race. [Itsvery important] that we make smalltweaks in our form, Monson said.Thats what makes you better. ForRajamani, her highlighted areas ofpractice were her arm form and lowjump. Without all of these aspectspracticed and perfected,]hurdles was nearly impossible.Another reason the BHSShurdlers were so successful was theoverwhelming support they had fromone another. The seniors [were] reallyhelpful, Mwakalindile said. They helpus with what we are supposed to do.With a group of four newcomers andonly two upperclassmen, theleadership of the seniors was key forthe teams success. FreshmanJessica Jennings had the support ofher team to literally stand up andcontinue. When I fell, the rest of theteam told me that its okay and to keepgoing, Jennings said.Running hurdles was one of themost difficult yet rewarding events intrack and field. With dedication, technique, and group support, thegirls team leapt over their competition, one hurdle at a time.- SARAH BROWNevlveJunior Wynne Milhouseinjured her foot earlier inthe year.
