One majorproblem is that catching people is a challenge. Several South studentswho participated in Hoosier Hills classesattended the honor night.Throughout Bloomington and Monroe County there areopportunities and programs for Bloomington high schoolstudents to get involved in activities of interest. One of theprograms available to Bloomington South and BloomingtonNorth students is the ability to take classes at BloomingtonHoosier Hills Career Center. Students are able to register totake classes at Hoosier Hills where they can learn skillsassociated with many careers. Every year at the end of theschool year Hoosier Hills has an award night to honor itsstudents and the wonderful work they have accomplished.One of the students acknowledged at the honor nightwas senior Andrew Morris. Morris was recognized for beingthe most outstanding student in biomedical sciences, receivingthe Leader of The Pack award and the Jesse and Beulah CoxExploratory Scholarship. The prestigious Cox Scholarshipawards the recipient a stipend package equal to the total costof attendance at Indiana University. Morris was one of 800initial applicants for the scholarship. From that 800, 70 wereselected to participate in a half hour interview. During the[interview] process, I tried to incorporate as many personalwork and volunteer experiences I have had, and relate mystory to Jesse Coxs, Morris said in regard to the interview. Inthe end, his hard work paid off, and Morris will be attendingIndiana University in the fall on the Cox Scholarship.Another South senior who was honored at Hoosier Hillshonor night was Abigail Feiner. She was awarded theExcellence in Science at Hoosier Hills award and wasacknowledged for earning the Bob and Jane HamelScholarship at IU. The scholarship is approximately $1,175in value and is awarded to an MCCSC graduate planning toattend IU as a freshman. For this scholarship Feiner wrote twoessays, one about her dream career and one about her favoritebook. I wrote about being a pediatrician and a dinosaur spaceprincess and about Number the Stars as being one of myfavorite books, Feiner, who will also be attending IndianaUniversity in the fall, said.Senior Marina Blackwell was acknowledged at the awardceremony for having received the B/MD scholarship from IUand the University of Southern Indiana. Blackwell was one ofsix students who received the scholarship. This scholarshipprovides the student with an undergraduate degree and givesthem a provisional seat at the IU school of medicine,Blackwell explained. Blackwell will be attending the Universityof Southern Indianas B/MD program in the fall.Students who have received scholarships are not the onlyones recognized at Hoosier Hills Honor night; those withoutstanding performance in other areas of education arerecognized as well. Senior Bryce Carson was honored at thehonor night for his exceptional performance competing invarious events. At conference, Carson and his team placedsecond overall in welding, fourth at the HOSA quiz bowl andwere a top competitor in district forestry.
