Over 300 peopleattended the show, and all of the proceeds, over $1,000,were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington. The group, which is composed of twelve South students, rehearsed daily for two months in preparation for the show. The play follows the life of Tom, a man who works at ashoe warehouse, but who aspires to be a poet. He is theprimary supporter of his mother and sister, yet tries toescape this reality through excessive visits to the local bar.Toms mother, Amanda, who is constantly searching for amale suitor for her overly shy daughter Laura, convincesTom to invite one of his coworkers to dinner: a meet-up thatis gravely detrimental to the familys stability.South senior Adam Diersing, a member since the startof Solarium in 2015, directed this years production. As afirst-time director, Diersing had a lot to learn, but enjoyedthe experience. It wasnt harder than what I expected, but itwas different than I expected, he said. While hisresponsibilities differed from those of other members of thecast and crew, Diersing felt a sense of unity among thegroup. He saw that the rest of the cast and crew understoodThis winter, Solarium Productions raised over $1,000for the Bo/s and Girls Club with their performance ofThe Glass Menagerie.the value of teamwork, and appreciated working with asmall group of people to build something together. One of Diersings responsibilities was choosing theshow. When approaching this task, he had to look for agood show that would fit the talents of the local high schoolactors while still being something he enjoyed. Tom, thenarrator in the show, was a favorite of his. Hes a big part ofthe reason why I chose the show, said Diersing.Another original member of Solarium, senior ClareMattsson, appeared in the show as Amanda, Tomsoverbearing mother. This being her biggest role so far,Mattsson spent much of her time preparing for theperformance. She said that she would spend at least twohours a day for a couple of months perfecting her role. Hercharacter needed to be sympathetic, but her dialoguedoesnt lend itself to that, Mattsson explained. Although theprocess was both challenging and time consuming, she feltthat it was worth the hard work. Overall, she enjoyed theexperience, cherishing memories from rehearsals andbonding with her cast members. Most importantly, being inThe Glass Menagerie allowed Mattsson to explore herpassion for acting even further: I really love theatre, shesaid.- VINCENT ANDREWS761 Community IUSAIN BOLT LOSES NINTH OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL 1/25 j MEXICOS PRESIDENT CANCELS PLANNED MEETING
