Description: BEST PEN[PALS]Learning another language makes it easier tocommunicate with people all across the world.This year, Ms. Shirin Ansaris Spanish studentsbecame pen pals with students learning English inMadrid, Spain. The students wrote letters to eachother in the language they are learning. JuniorVeera Shah said that her favorite part was receivingher letter. Shah said, Getting a letter nowadays ispretty exciting. Sophomore Jamie Lees favoritepart was to be able to use Spanish to contactsomeone and have it be understood by a nativespeaker. This smell distracted man/ studentsand teachers and prevented some students from being able to work.In the first few weeks of the second trimester, thefirst floor of South was taken over by anunpleasant smell. The smell was a popularconversation topic between students and teachersalike. Junior Elizabeth Pursley said, It justsmelled like a sewer, it was like walking through adumpster. The smell affected many classrooms,hallways, and staircases.The smell leaked into classrooms and causedquite the disturbance. Neither students norteachers could stop talking about the smell.Freshman Ron Underwood said, It definitelyaffected the learning environment. We werefocusing on the smell instead of working on ourprojects. Students and teachers agree that thesmell created an environment that was not veryconducive to students learning and teachersteaching.Students with multiple classes on the firstfloor really suffered. These students had to sitthrough lessons and classwork while smellingthe rancid odor throughout the day. Multiplestudents said that they had trouble focusing whilein most of their classes on the first floor.The smell lasted maybe three or four days,estimated by sophomore Carson Adams. Thelingering odor lurked around the school andcaused some disruptions, such as students on theyearbook staff having to leave their classroom inorder to find a better smelling space. The yearbookstaff ended up relocating to the second floor.Although a few classes relocated throughout theweeks, all classes on the first floor were effected.Underwood said that he and his classmates putour shirts over our noses and also used artificialcleansers.
