Description: Springers cagers capture secondSCC crown, earn third in state pollsChampions—a word used to describethird-year coach Bill Springers varsitybasketball team after they captured boththe sectional and South Central Conference crowns and completed the seasonwith a record of 23-3.Souths only regular scheduled seasonloss was to Gary Emerson, 68-56, duringthe first round of the Hall of Fame Classic. The tourney, held in Hinkle Field-house, was sponsored by the IndianaBasketball Hall of Fame.Craig Buffie, the Panthers highscorer, made 19 points in Souths 62-60victory over Washington. The game wasclose with the exception of Souths 20-14lead at the end of the third quarter after a20-ft. shot by Blackwell at the buzzer.Washington outshot and out-reboundedthe Panthers, but Bloomington Southhad fewer errors.The Panthers finished the season witha third-place ranking in both high schoolpolls.South won its second uncontested SCCcrown by finishing with a perfect 8-0 conference record. Springer believes thatSouth belongs to one of the toughestconferences in Indiana.The Panthers captured their first sectional title since 1973. South defeatedOrleans in the first round of the Bedfordsectional. The Panthers then confrontedBedford-North Lawrence in an intense,memorable game.The Panthers led 15-14 at the end ofthe first quarter but pulled up to an 11-point lead, 38-27, at halftime. Bedfordnever got the lead during the finalstretch, but the Stars did tie at 53-53 and55-55. Blackwell made a free throw with2:21 left, to give South a 56-55 lead. ThePanthers ended the game 61-59.The Panthers then captured the sectional crown by defeating Mitchell 53-51in a game far more difficult than anticipated.South then defeated Cass, the lastundefeated high school team in Indiana,51-46, in a doubleheader at MarketSquare Arena.The Panthers were defeated 46-53 byWashington at Washington during thefirst round of the regional. Both teamsended up with 16 field goals. The Panthers lost it at the free throw line, hittingonly 14 of 24 to 21 of 27 for the Hatchets.
