Description: oner1TRESS; The mood was cheerful. Vibrant| costumes swirled through the air asI instruments sung lively tunes. Amiming king and his haughty queenaroused chuckles from thet audience.Once Upon a Mattress, the201 2 Sounds of South production, was a departure from the groupstypical choice. For the past fouryears weve done a show involvingrape, killing, the Holocaust or acombination of the three, this wasjust really fun, said senior KateSeader, who played the main roleof Princess Winifred in the musical.A comedic variation of theclassic fairy tale The Princess andthe Pea, Once Upon a Mattressrequired downright goofiness fromthe cast. Seader embraced thedemands of this lighthearted spirit. You can be creative, you can takea character and do it differentways, she said. This, Seaderreported, was not possible withmore serious parts. Some members, though, found the shift from dramatic to sillyto be a bit of a challenge. It takesso much energy to be funny andentertaining the entire time, saidjunior Brian Kress, theminstrel/narrator of the production.Senior Quinn Galyan, whoplayed mute King Sextumus, evensought out professional advice toachieve the desired goofiness. Heworked with Mike Price, an actorfrom Bloomingtons Cardinal StageCompany, to try to make his role asuccess. In the past I played theold man who watched everyonedie, it was a nice change to dogoofy things, he said.- ELEANORE FUQUAvm^i •2.
