&For the 2012 marching band season, the Panther Regimentdebuted Rock Show/ a spirited performance featuring botha classic rock selection and an edgy attitud<The Bloomington South PantherRegiment had an unorthodoxapproach to marching band; insteadof attempting to compete with theother bands, it aimed to entertain thecrowd and make them, as thePanther Regiment liked to say, partydown. The Panther Regiments styleworked because they had becomefamous for two things: always havingfun and always winning the PeoplesChoice Award.Senior Emily Viers was ecstaticwhen Band Director Mr. RobertDubie Dubinski asked her to bethe drum major, the marching bandsconductor. As a fifth year marchingband senior, she could attest to itsoriginality. We get so manycompliments from other bands, parents and drum majors. There is agood crowd reaction, Viers said.Although it was freshmanAndrew Liles first year of band, healready had a sense of PantherRegiments unique style. Were notas serious, more fun based. We dontcompete for first, more for ourselvesand the crowd, Lile said. The 2012 program, RockShow, encapsulated the spirit of theband. Junior Sarah Goy, selectedas one of two color guard captainsof 2012, was thrilled when shefound out the theme. We dancedand got involved with the crowd.Angus [dance move named forAngus Young of AC/DC] was a bighit, Goy said.Viers saw the show as a newfrontier, but with the same soul. Shesaid, This show was very differentfrom past years because it was edgyinstead of fluffy-dancey. But thecrowd still danced with us.The Panther Regiment fulfilledtheir goals by winning a PeoplesChoice Award at every contestwhere it was eligible, coming to atotal of six prizes from their adoringpublic. The show may be in thearchives, but it will not soon beforgotten. Goy said, Rock Showwas my best show yet, and Imgoing to use those dance moves atevery party I go to.
