PHOTOS BYADALIE SCHERSCHEL-■Bwing home the SMIigton Souths history, boyssoccer won the Conference Indiana Champions Title.The Bloomington South boyssoccer team set two goals forthemselves in 2012: to goundefeated in their regular season,and to win all eight conferencegames. While the boys did notquite reach their goal to win everyregular season game, they did winall of their conference games.Between September 9 andSeptember 22, the team playedfive conference games anddefeated the No. 4 team in thestate: Columbus North. Amongtheir other victories in their twoweeks of conference games werethose against Lawrence Central,Pike, Perry Meridian, andSouthport.In the game against ColumbusNorth, the South team recognizedthat every minute counted. Keepingthis in mind, the team seized theiropportunity to take the lead whenthe opposing teams goalie made acrucial mistake and dropped theball, which allowed junior KellyDunigan to score the first goal ofthe game. The team went on to winthe game 2-1, but the victory didnot come without a price. Twoplayers suffered injuries, withsenior Dillon Cron getting abloody nose and junior DylanWendel getting a gash over hisleft eye that landed him in thehospital.The game against Perry Meridianwas a shutout, with South onceagain victorious. The first half of thegame was scoreless but Southcame out strong after halftime.Seniors James Audretsch andChristopher Post worked togetherto score two goals for the Panthers.Sophomore Andres Hernandez-Jimenez, assisted by senior TylerStonier, scored the final goal ofthe game, leaving the score at 3-0.The only thing left for thePanthers to do to bring home thechampionship banner was to finishchampionship banner was to finishtheir game against Southport onSeptember 22. By halftime, thescore was tied 1-1. As the crowdperched on the edge of their seats,senior Jacob Kabrick broke thesuspense and scored the game-winning goal. The score was 2-1and the boys soccer team wontheir first ever Conference Indianatitle.Besides bringing home abanner, the soccer team still hadone final goal. We want to breakthe sixteen-year drought of losingsectionals to North, said seniorJosef Weibel. Kabrick agreedand added, we hope to winsectionals and go further than anyother South team has before.All in all, the boys managed tobeat the goals they set in thebeginning of the season, andwould continue in the hopes ofmaking an even bigger name forthemselves.-ADALIE SCHERSCHEL=:* |
